Portrait of Lee Williams from 1920 Edmonton Stockyard Members Photo

Leland S. Williams (1892-1982), "Lee" to his friends, arrived in Edmonton in 1912 with a load of horses and a letter of introduction in his pocket to the manager of Swift & Company in North Edmonton. He was given a job on the road gang but soon began handling stock in the alleys of Swift. From there he moved into livestock buying. During that period he was noticed by Henry Weiller of Weiller & Weiller Company who bought cattle for his livestock commission business centered in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Photo of Henry Weiller, Detail of Larger Shot Henry Weiller (18??-1956), and his brother Billy, had built a chain of livestock buying sites in the northern United States. They also imported cattle from Canada. After meeting Lee in Edmonton, Henry suggested they form a partnership to buy and sell livestock in Canada. The Weillers provided the financing and Lee went to work for Weiller & Weiller Company, forming Weiller & Williams Co., Ltd. (See the terms of WWCOLTD's Articles of Charter from 1925.)

Billy Weiller (18??-19??), Henry's brother and partner, died at a rather young age and so the partnership existed only between Henry and Lee. Henry established other connections which resulted in companies such as the one in Calgary: Adams, Wood and Weiller. (See business card reproduced on Years of Expansion page.)
